“Reeling for Ronnie”: Lock Search Group in the Community
At Lock Search Group, we believe in the value of giving back to the community. Several years ago we decided to honour one of our Consultants, Ron Brown, by establishing an education fund in his name, and by holding an annual fishing tournament to raise money for the fund. The event is called “Reeling for Ronnie”, and is now in its 8th year as a fully registered charity event.
All funds raised go towards scholarships for deserving university students who would not otherwise receive a higher education. The tournament has proven to be a big motivator to the Lock team, who find it incredibly rewarding to assist students in their quest to improve themselves.
This year our group traveled once again over the June 24th weekend to Haida Gwaii (off the northwest coast of British Columbia), the site of some of the most spectacular salmon fishing in the world. We were graciously hosted at the North Island Lodge by the West Coast Fishing Club staff. Our group of 24 contestants came from all over Canada (Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal) as well as Atlanta and New York.
We’re proud to say that we broke our record by raising well over $10,000 in 2017 for the Ron Brown Scholarship Fund, bringing the total to over $100,000.
The fishing was excellent, with many Tyees caught: our derby winner, Aaron Carmak, is shown below holding an impressive 36-pounder.
Following a fantastic day on the water, we were treated to a gourmet meal prepared by the North Island Lodge staff. We then held an auction of several items generously contributed by the members of our group.
The evening was a special one, and of course we never fail to remember the remarkable guy who inspired this tournament. Ron Brown was a dynamic, much-loved Consultant who passed away tragically in 2008. He was known for his exceptional service to clients and for the real impact he made on the Alberta business market. The stories about him are legendary and his memory continues to inspire us to this day.

All in all, the great fishing, the great weather, and the generosity shown by our team and all of the contestants made this year’s event a weekend to remember. Thanks to everyone for their contribution in making it happen!
