Policy & Regulatory Analyst, Carbon Advisory

They help guide large businesses such as municipalities, healthcare facilities, financial institutions, industrials and manufacturers on a profitable journey to net-zero GHG emissions.

    The Opportunity
    The Analyst, reporting to the Director, Policy & Regulatory Advisor, supports our client's Carbon Advisory engagements, develops subject matter expertise on carbon related policy & regulatory aspects, proactively advice clients about new carbon reduction incentives, extensively collaborates with executive-level team members and other departments to provide knowledge, hands-on support and takes accountability of carbon and policy and regulatory matters. The Analyst will also be expected to create and present quality deliverables that support essential project workstreams, position papers, executive dashboards while keeping the internal and external stakeholders informed with curated intelligence.

    Core Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following areas:

    GHG Emission, Carbon & Policy
    • Actively track, analyze and take ownership as our client’s expert on provincial and federal carbon policy & regulatory matters, including knowledge on the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act and the Canadian Net Zero Emissions Accountability Act, Emissions Performance Standards, Federal Emission Reduction Plans, etc.
    • Actively summarize and analyze GHG Emission/Carbon policy & regulatory changes to support weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc Carbon Advisory intel via webinars and power point presentation for internal and external dissemination.
    • Perform data entry and submission of regulatory carbon reporting for relevant clients on Federal as well as Provincial portals under the O.Reg 390/18, Output-Based Pricing System, and Emissions Performance Standards regulations.
    • Track, analyze and summarize national and local policy and regulatory changes pertaining to carbon, energy efficiency initiatives and climate change, extracting relevant business impacts for our client
    Climate Strategy
    • Support the development of our client’s Climate Strategy service alongside the Director of Policy and Regulatory Advisory and CEO.
    • Act as a lead product manager and technical point of contact for non-capital climate investments (RECs, offsets, RNG, RSNG)
    Other Areas of Assistance
    • Track and communicate new or on-going federal, provincial, municipal, and corporate incentives
    • Support Sustainability Team in establishing internal sustainability initiatives, including developing ESG training/resource material, establishing KPIs and reporting and support in the inaugural 2022 ESG report
    • Support in ongoing business development efforts (on behalf of the Carbon Advisory team) such as RFPs content that fall under the Carbon Advisory team’s purview.
    • Collaborate and support Communications team with research, intel, by unpacking major incentives to inform marketing and sales material.
    • Conduct research on other policy-related initiatives as requested by the Director Policy & Regulatory, VPs and CEO when requested.
    Hard Skills
    • Graduate in engineering, science, sustainability, or a similar discipline.
    • Post grad. in engineering, M. Sc. degree, MBA or an equivalent is an asset.
    • Relevant co-op or work experience in energy, climate change, sustainability and any other relevant field
    • 1-2 years experience and/or curiosity in policy & regulatory domain covering energy and carbon sector (preferred)
    • Knowledge and understanding of sustainability frameworks, energy efficiency practices and renewable energy technologies
    Soft Skills
    • Strong business acumen and strategic thinking
    • Ability to understand the challenge quickly and accurately as well as ask the right questions
    • Strong conceptual, as well as quantitative and qualitative analytical skills including MS Excel-based models and dashboard creation.
    • Problem definition, solution discovery, cross-functional socialization, and stakeholder buy-in ensuring commitment to excellence
    • Proactive, self-motivated and able to work with limited guidance
    • Ownership of tasks while collaborating with a close-knit team
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
