Technical Buyer/ Sourcing Specialist

Our client is looking for a Technical Buyer/ Sourcing Specialist who will be responsible for procurement activities across the company with focus on Operations. The ideal candidate will reside in Toronto, Ontario.

    Overview of the position:
    The Technical Buyer/Sourcing Specialist will lead purchasing activities to support their manufacturing pipeline. This will include procurement of capital investments in production and battery test lab as well as raw material and semifinished goods used in the production of their cells. Negotiation experience with suppliers on cost lead-time and quality is needed to support their aggressive timeline and cost targets bring their novel technology to market.
    The successful candidate will also work closely with the engineering team and understand the requirements of the products to source alternatives when required. Additionally, they will play a role in liaising between their material and manufacturing service providers. An effective Technical Buyer will have project management skills to anticipate need and keep parts and material on their shelves on schedule for their production builds and specialty capital equipment purchases.
    What you will be doing:
    • Build and maintain relationships with their new and existing material and manufacturing service providers. Coordinate technical discussions between vendors and appropriate members of the staff as required to support purchasing decisions.
    • Track in-house inventory and purchase material, schedule, and follow up on delivery dates according to manufacturing and project timelines.
    • Set re-order thresholds based on projected demand and supplier lead-times.
    • Negotiate with vendors to achieve the best value considering price, lead-time, and required engineering specifications.
    • Build and maintain list of compatible alternative material part numbers and suppliers.
    • Manage shipping and receiving, and customs clearance for international transactions.
    • Build a system to accurately organize and document supplier quotes, purchase orders, sales orders, invoices, and receipts.
    • Research and recommend ERP systems appropriate to their current and future procurement needs.
    • Research and identify candidate suppliers for new capital equipment and new components. Author RFI/RFQ’s as appropriate and manage responses working with project leads to award orders to the most qualified vendors.
    • Manage efficient movements of materials between suppliers using 3rd party logistics companies to support production timelines.
    • Proactively manage supplier relations so that we preserve their capacity as needed to support timelines.
    The experience you bring:


    • Relevant diploma or degree in procurement, operations management, or logistics is preferred.
    • Engineering or Technical degree or diploma in Materials, Chemical, Mechanical, and/or Electronics knowledge is an asset.
    • 5-10 year of experience in purchasing supporting production and engineering.
    • Strong analytical and negotiation skills, with a keen attention to detail.
    • Highly organized, and able to maintain detailed, accurate documentation.
    • Excellent and persuasive English language skills – written and oral.
    • Value-conscious, both in time and financially. 
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office. Experience using ERP systems is an asset. 
    • Eligible to work in Canada. 
    An Asset: 

    • Advanced degrees are an asset.
    • Oversight and production planning for a CNC shop are considered an asset.
    • Experience with automated welding processes. 
    • Experience with epoxy potting processes. 
    • Experience with Battery, Hydrogen Fuel cells or high-volume automotive industry may be relevant. 
    • Experience sourcing internationally. Chinese language skills are an asset.
