Project Accountant – Construction (Sub-Contractor sector)

Burnaby, BC

 

Our client is an industry leading specialty trade construction organization based in Burnaby, British Columbia. They have retained Lock Search Group to partner in their efforts to bring on a proven Project Accountant to join their Accounting and Financial team

Reporting into the Chief Financial Officer, you will take on a critical role for overseeing all financial aspects of active construction projects, with a strong focus on cost control, billing accuracy, financial reporting, and contract administration for construction projects. This role acts as a key partner to Project Managers, Site Supervisors, and the Operations team, ensuring project financials are accurate, timely, and compliant with both corporate and contractual requirements. This is an in-office position based in the South Burnaby market.

 

 

Primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Monitor and report financial performance across multiple construction projects
  • Maintain project budgets and track labor, material, and equipment costs against estimates
  • Prepare cost reports, forecasts, and variance analyses; investigate and resolve discrepancies
  • Allocate job costs and analyze project profitability
  • Manage client billing, including progress billings, schedules of values, and billing packages
  • Ensure compliance with processes for change orders, holdbacks, progress draws, and lien documentation
  • Track change orders, retention, and project impacts to support accurate revenue recognition
  • Maintain complete and accurate project records, including contracts, invoices, and correspondence
  • Review vendor and subcontractor invoices for accuracy and contractual compliance
  • Support project teams with change order pricing, cost tracking, and financial insights
  • Monitor productivity, equipment usage, and material consumption against budgets
  • Collaborate with estimating and project teams to compare estimated vs. actual costs
  • Prepare weekly and monthly financial and operational reports
  • Manage collections, track outstanding balances, and resolve payment discrepancies
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, accounting policies, and audit requirements
  • Support auditors and provide documentation for year-end reviews\
  • Set up and close project accounts within the accounting system
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to improve billing, reporting, and financial processes
  • Perform general accounting and administrative duties as required

Qualifications

  • Diploma or Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field.
  • Must possess previous Accounting, and/or Project Accounting experience from within the Construction sector
  • Preference to those with direct experience working with a Sub-Contractor
  • 3–5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction.
  • Strong understanding of job costing, progress billing, and WIP reporting.
  • Strong Excel skills, with the ability to analyze large datasets.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Detail‑oriented with excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Strong sense of urgency and accountability.
